At two oclock the next morninsf we were ao;ain on theroad. The clouds separated, and the moon lighted up ourway over the pasture-fields of Karagoosh. We soon re-gained the highway, and passed a ruined village. Thelight was sufficient to reveal the well-cultivated fieldson either side, where the wheat was growing rich andin abundance. But there was a shade of loneliness ina start so early, and all naturally wished for the morn-ing. Hour after hour wore slowly away. At length theday dawned; the stars faded; the moon grewpale; thesun rose. It was Good-Friday in ancient Assyria. Wewere amidst the ruins of buried empires. On eitherhand were great mounds wherein are the remains offormer sjreatness. The domes and minarets of Mosulnow appeared on the west bank of the Tigris. All feltthe excitement of the moment. In the bed of the river are several islands, whichwere now nearly submerged.
