Hindistanda islam — ölkə əhalisinin 14,2%-ni təşkil edən təxminən 172 milyon insan ilə Hindistanın ən böyük ikinci dinidir (2011-ci il siyahıyaalınmasına görə).[1][2][3] İslam dini Hindistana ilk olaraq VII əsrin əvvəllərində ərəb tacirləri vasitəsilə ölkənin qərb sahillərində yerləşən Malabar[4] və Konkan-Qucarat regionlarına gəlmişdir.[5] Keralada yerləşən Çeraman Cümə məscidinin, 629-cu ildə Malik ibn Dinar tərəfindən inşa edilən Hindistandakı ilk məscid olduğu qəbul edilir.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
Bizim eranın VII əsrində Bəhreyn valisi tərəfindən Bharuça edilən dəniz ekspedisiyasından sonra, Cənubi Ərəbistan və Fars körfəzindən gələn mühacir ərəb və fars müsəlman tacir icmaları Qucaratın sahil zonalarında məskunlaşmağa başlamışdır.[12] Şiəlik məzhəbinin ismaililik qolu isə XI əsrin ikinci yarısında Fatimi xəlifəsi Müstansır tərəfindən göndərilən daillər (təbliğatçılar) vasitəsilə yayılmağa başlamışdır.[13][14] Hindistanda ən geniş yayılmış məzhəb Sünnilik, əsas fiqhi məktəb isə Hənəfilikdir. İslam XII əsrdən etibarən Şimali Hindistana türk yürüşləri ilə daha geniş miqyasda nüfuz etməyə başlamış və həmin dövrdən bəri Hindistanın dini və mədəni irsinin ayrılmaz bir hissəsinə çevrilmişdir.[15] XVI əsrdə Böyük Moğol hökmdarı Əkbər şah, imperiyanın yeni paytaxtı Fatehpur Sikrinin memarlıq kompleksinin əsas hissəsi olaraq böyük Cümə məscidini istifadəyə vermişdir.
Əsrlər boyu Hindistanda hindu və müsəlman mədəniyyətlərinin mühüm inteqrasiyası baş vermiş[16][17] və müsəlmanlar Hindistanın iqtisadiyyatında, elmində, siyasətində və ümumi mədəniyyətində olduqca fundamental rol oynamışdırlar.[18]

Up to about the tenth century the largest settlement of Arabs and Persian Muslim traders are not found in Malabar however but rather more to the north in coastal towns of the Konkan and Gujarat, where in pre-Islamic times the Persians dominated the trade with the west. Here the main impetus to Muslim settlement came from the merchants of the Persian Gulf and Oman, with a minority from Hadramaut.
