Text Appearing Before Image:

The above cut shows another adaptation of the electro-magnetic field forthe treatment of disease. This consists of an ordinary tufted leather couch, concealed in which are a number of heavy horse shoe magnets, bent into awide and shallow curve, and so arranged that when the patient reclinesabove them, his body sinks down so that when the current is turned on heis traversed laterally by the electro-magnetic fields between the poles of thedifferent electro-magnets in the row. To get the effect longitudinally through THE ELECTRO-THHRAPEUTIC GUIDE 183 the body or part, it must be placed transversely across the couch. This isan ornamental instrument, as well as useful, and is very refreshing to thepatient, after the exertion of a walk or other treatment or operation, whichhas irritated the nervous system. It will be found especially useful aftergynecological operations and treatments. What is the electro-static cage ?

Text Appearing After Image:

The above cut shows the large high frequency, or alternated currentbody cage, made after the pattern of D Arsonval, in which the patient isplaced and about him is thrown the oscillatory current field. This methodof treatment is especially useful in asthenic conditions dependent on im-poverished blood, and has been extensively used on the continent, in thetreatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, asthma, pertussis, and various otherrespiratory and nervous troubles. It may be used with the alternateddynamic current, and results secured, which rival those obtained from theauto-conduction cage, when connected with a high frequency apparatusfrom a high tension inductorium. This solenoid has no magnets inconnection, hence the field is not as strong as the ones with magnets, buton account of the great weight of a magnet coil ot this size, it is not advis-able. This is to be connected to the alternated current, and will be foundespecially, beneficial in all forms of general debility, weakened stat
