Another 'termite mound' lookout and ventilation shaft in the distance, deep in the jungle. Who would guess that there are human beings armed to the teeth crawling in the ground under you! As a matter of fact, looking at the largish opening up front, it could well be one of the tunnel entrances for the Viet Cong as well. To combat these guerrilla tactics, U.S. and South Vietnamese forces trained soldiers known as “tunnel rats” to navigate the tunnels in order to detect booby traps and enemy troop presence. Now part of a Vietnam War memorial park in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the Cu Chi tunnels have become a popular tourist attraction. I wonder if any wild creatures now slither or crawl into the now abandoned tunnels nowadays? (Cu Chi Tunnels, Saigon/ HCM, Vietnam, Nov. 2016)
