Otuz doqquzuncu simfoniya Volfqanq Amadey Motsart tərəfindən Qırxıncı və Qırx birinci simfoniyalarla birlikdə 1788-ci ildə, iyun-avqust aylarında, bir neçə həftə ərzində yazılmışdır.[1][2] Bu simfoniyanın ilk premyerası məlum deyil, lakin İvan Andersviçin qeydlərinə əsasən ilk qeyd olunan tarix 1792-ci ilə aiddir.[3] Simfoniyanın ifa müddəti 30 dəqiqədir.

Motsart bu əsərləri ciddi maliyyə çətinlikləri və depressiya ilə xarakterizə olunan gərgin bir şəraitdə yazmışdı. (Maykl Puchbergə 27 iyun 1788-ci il tarixli məktub):

"Yanıma gəlin və məni ziyarət edin; Mən həmişə evdə oluram; — 2 ay ərzində digər yaşayış yerlərindən daha çox yaşadığım 10 gündə daha çox çalışdım və tez-tez məni sıxan, yalnız çox çətinliklə davam gətirdiyim qara düşüncələr olmasaydı, daha yaxşı olardım."[4]
